A new neighborhood is rising from the sea of parking lots near The Bushnell.
The Bushnell South area encompasses 20 acres along Capitol Avenue, Buckingham Street, and Hudson Street. The idea is to have a mixed-use cultural district, that could hold as many as 1,200 apartments and 60,000 sq.ft. of commercial space.
A new parking garage with 411 spaces in 4.5 stories on Capitol Avenue is located next to the Presbyterian church. It is designed so it can be wrapped with housing in the future. This project is seen as a catalyst for future neighborhood development.
The State of Connecticut has also vacated two buildings on the corner of Trinity and Elm streets, creating two more opportunities for the Bushnell South development. The neighborhood is anchored by the revitalized State Office Building and Connecticut Square. It would build upon development in and around 55 Elm Street.
