The pathway on the bridge span will eventually connect to the street network on both sides of the bridge.
A plan for a multi-use trail along route 3 will connect the already constructed walkway along the Putnam Bridge. There are presently few options for pedestrians and bicyclists to get across the Connecticut River south of Hartford to Old Saybrook. It is a crucial link in a trail network that has been developing on both sides of the river. Goodwin University has been developing trails from East Hartford down into the Glastonbury meadows, and Riverfront Recapture is also working with the Town of Wethersfield to extend trails south from Hartford.
Work began in summer 2022 and is expected to be opened in fall 2023.
