Reimagining Main Street

A new vision for Main Street in Hartford has been put together, connecting Downtown with SoDo in an attractive, multi-modal manner.

The City of Hartford worked with Stantec and a host of community partners – including the iQuilt Partnership – to develop a concept for Main Street stretching from Barnard Park to Asylum Street. It includes notable design features such as a roundabout at Park and Main Streets, a cycle track along the east side of the roadway, multiple mid-block pedestrian crossings, and landscaping. The idea is for Main Street to be the most welcoming Main Street it can be, and be specifically safer for pedestrians, bikers, and transit users.

With a design in place, the City is in a better position to get grant funding to make projects happen. The consultants did look at phasing for the project, both by geographic segments and by design components. All work would occur within existing curb widths, allowing for faster and cheaper projects.

As of March 2021, an implementation plan is in development and design work is underway for the area around South Green (Wyllys Street to the fire station).
